Grafton Planning Board Action

Babcock Lake Tree Cutting Found to Have Minimal Environmental Impact

By Doug La Rocque

At its most recent meeting, the Town of Grafton Planning Board gave its blessing to a two-lot subdivision on the Radio Tower Way property of Wes Vars.  This followed a public hearing held before the regular session at which there was no public comment. [private]Planning Board Chairman Tom Withcuskey reported the environmental impact study indicated no negative effects would result from the subdivision.  The Board voted four to none to approve, with Board Member Owen Grandjean absent.  Mr. Vars requested the subdivision in order to transfer five acres of property to his son.

Changes Along Babcock Lake

Withcuskey also reported back to the Board about a study he had asked Dr. David Hunt to conduct concerning a lot line adjustment along North Shore Road. There was Board concern about the cutting of mostly dead trees to create a pathway to the lake. Hunt found the tree canopy on the property of Michael and Julie Longo remains well intact.  He found no significant soil runoff into the lake because of the cut. Withcusky said he confirmed this himself by inspecting the property following a day of heavy rains. The Board voted unanimously to approve the adjustment. Dr. Hunt conducted the study at no charge.

The Board also heard an informal presentation by Alec Vassey concerning a proposed two lot subdivision along Claus Road.  Mr. Vassey is the prospective buyer of the property currently owned by James Kane. The Board expects to receive a formal presentation at its September meeting.[/private]
