Blacksmith Workshop At The Grafton Library

September 3, 2015 By eastwickpress

The Grafton Community Library is hosting an exciting introductory blacksmithing workshop on Saturday, September 26, from 9 am to 4 pm.  Class size is limited, therefore advance registration and a commitment to attend is required.

[private]In this class, students will learn the basics of traditional blacksmithing to produce functional and decorative works.  Equipment, tools and safety concerns will be covered as well as an introduction to techniques, metallurgy and iron history. A simple project can be completed to take home, such as functional hooks, a candleholder or a creative piece, as time permits. Appropriate attire is required, consisting of long sleeved cotton clothing, closed toe shoes, and long pants.  All materials and safety equipment will be provided.

Instructor Ron Bakerian began working in the forge as a practical approach to tool making for large-scale woodwork, which then developed into decorative and functional hand forged ironwork. Interest in the roots of the craft led Bakerian to work with other local smiths on primitive methods of iron production and experimental archeology.  His current work incorporates natural and organic motifs utilizing natural materials with forged work in functional and sculptural elements. Bakerian is an instructor at Salem Art Works in Salem, NY, where he chairs the Board of Directors and serves as Co-Director of the blacksmithing program.

This project is made possible in part through a Community Arts Grant, a program funded by The Arts Center of the Capital Region through the New York State Council on the Arts, a State agency. Visit the library at 2455 NY Route 2, and stay connected via Facebook, www.graftoncommunitylibrary.org, or phone 279-0580. [/private]
