February: Snow, Cold And Illness

September 25, 2015 By eastwickpress

Monday, February 1, 1836: Today quite blustering with snow. This morning I carried my children to school and then I took my team and went into my swamp on my Rodgers Farm and chopped and drew home a load of wood. In coming home the road was drifted. Mr. John Russel and son helped me shovel out road before I could get home.
Friday Feb. 5: Today a severe cold day. I only tended to my chores and chopped wood to the door, and this evening I took the cutter and carried my wife to Mr. Salmon Oins on a visit.
Saturday: I called into Wm Hadsell’s store and he paid me up the note of two hundred and 97 dollars and 44 cts – by deducting out sixteen dollars which balances out his book account against me and I took a receipt in full. I then returned home. It was nearly twelve at night. Today a child died to Mr. R. Danford’s. The mother was there on a visit from Dalton, the name is Quimba.
Sunday: This afternoon I called down to see Russell Pierce, he is quite out of health with a swelled throat.
Monday: Today another snow storm, I only tended to my chores. tonight Ezra Butes stayed to our house. He came along with Doctor Thomas to help him through the snow drives going to doctor Russel Pierce for the swelled throat.
Tuesday: Today I shoveled snow on the highway, breaking out the road, and chopped wood to the door.
