Heartbreak on the soccer field this past week as the Berlin Mountaineers Boys Squad lost both the game and first place in the Central Hudson Valley League. The Eagles of Loudonville Christian scored with just over three minutes left to play to break a 1-1 tie. The victory also gave the Eagles sole possession of first place in the league, with the Mountaineers holding down second. [private]
Tom Seeberg scored both of Loudonville Christian’s goals. Adam Spino and John Rosenberg picking up assists. Ryan Willis scored Berlin’s lone goal on a break in on the Eagle’s goalkeeper. The assist went to Tyler Kellar. Following the game, Coach Art Schmich told his team he was proud of the way they played, and not to get down. There are still some tough games on the Eagles schedule, including a matchup against Doane Stuart in Rensselaer. Doane Stuart has not lost yet this year on their home field. Schmich said the game could have gone either way, citing some bad luck with balls on the goal line in the last minute of play. Schmich also credited the play of Loudonville Christian. He said both teams played their hearts out.
Bouncing Back
The Mountaineers hung tough in second place two days later with a 4-1 win over Waterford. Recently called up from the JV squad, Tyler Kellar showed his coach’s confidence in him was well placed, scoring three goals for the Berlin Boys. Joel Sweener had the other Berlin goal with Jackson Burhans, Dan Bassallio and Seiji Akera all credited with one assist apiece. Burhans also made 8 saves during his stint in the Berlin net. Colin Love had 9 save during his time as keeper. Quintin Cahrenger scored Waterford’s lone goal. Both games where very cleanly played with no cards shown. Saturday the Mountaineers were beaten 5-1 at Galway. Ryan Willis had the lone score for Berlin. The Mountaineers were down 2-0 at the half and according to Coach Art Schmich, they “were never really in it.” Schmich said injuries continue to hamper his club.
Berlin Sports Roundup
In recent Cross Country action, the Berlin girls lost to Emma Willard on the school’s Troy course 18 to 32. Unlike many sports, the lower score in cross country competition is the winner. The Berlin girls were led by Maggie Gordon who finished in third place with a time of 22:06. Haley Chaykowski-Jewitt placed 7th with a time of 22:54. The girl’s harriers finished 8th overall in the recent Grout Invitational. Maggie Gordon again led the way for Berlin, finishing in 16th place. Chaykowski-Jewitt was 24th, and Cayla Hungerford finished 37th out of 120 runners.
Boys Cross Country fared a little better, defeating Waldorf 15 to 49. Alex Flowers finished the meet in first place with a time of 19:40. Ryan Gosse was second and Collin Douglas third. In the Grout Invitational, the Boys finished 16th overall, with Nyck Styer crossing the finish line in 30th place and Ryan Gosse 42nd out of 145 runners.
The Berlin Girls soccer had a good week, defeating Doane Stuart 5-1 and Loudonville Christian 2-0. The female Mountaineers remain in second place in the CHVL. In girls Volleyball competition, the Mountaineers lost to Emma Willard 3-0. Emma Woolley had 3 points and 4 kills for Berlin. Later in the week, the girls defeated Hawthorne Valley 3-0. Cassie Bentley had 10 aces and 2 kills for the Mountaineers. Laura Ryder was credited with 5 aces and 4 kills, and Emma Woolley had 5 points in the victory. The girls later lost a match to Germantown 3-0. [/private]
