Berlin Boys Soccer Finish In A Tie For CHVL Crown

October 22, 2015 By eastwickpress

By Doug La Rocque

By virtue of the Berlin Boy’s 2-1 victory last Saturday, the varsity soccer team earned a tie with Loudonville Christian for first place in the Central Hudson Valley League .  Trailing in the game 1-0, Ryan Willis tied the game with a score from outside the penalty box.  [private]

Matt Moran later tallied the game winner.  Goalkeeper Jackson Burhans secured the victory with an outstanding save on a Germantown breakaway.  The Mountaineers now wait the Section II seeding, with hopes for a home game in the opening round.  In other action this past week, the Boy’s soccer posted a shootout win after a 0-0 tie with Cambridge and a 3-0 victory of Heatly of Green Island.  Ioann Popov scored twice for Berlin; Ryan Willis had the other tally.  Assists went to Nick Trippie and Matt Moran.  Jackson Burhans has 8 saves in posting the shutout.

Senior Day For The

Girls Varsity Soccer Team

Last Friday also brought the conclusion of the regular season for the Lady Mountaineers.  Their tough 1-0 loss to Emma Willard kept them from claiming a share of the CHVL title, but the girls team should also qualify for the Sectional play and awaits its seeding.  Before the game the school honored their senior players for their hard work, pride and dedication.  Earlier in the week, the girls shut out the Rensselaer Rams by the score of 8-0.  Jewel Pietrzak scored five times, with Gabby Mazzel, Jordan Cahill and Amanda Despart also posting a goal each.

Jewel Pietrzak Sets Scoring Record

While still a Junior at Berlin High School, Jewel Pietrzak has cruised past the long time goal scoring mark for both Boys and Girls Soccer.  Earlier this year, she surpassed the established mark of 104 goals held by Dean Maxon, now a town councilman.   Maxon said he is ecstatic for her and hopes for continued success for the young athlete from the Babcock Lake section of Grafton.

Berlin Sports Roundup

Berlin’s Cross Country Team held its only home meet recently, competing against both Hoosick Valley and Greenwich.  The boys defeated the HV Indians 24-31 but lost the contest to Greenwich 26-30.  Nick Styer led the Mountaineers with a 2nd place finish.  Alex Flowers came in 4th and Ryan Gosse in 6th.  On the Girls side of the meet, Berlin fell to both Greenwich, 21-37 and Hoosick Valley, 26-32.  Maggie Gordon led the way for the girl’s harriers finishing in 5th place; Haley Chaykowski-Jewitt came in 6th.  Both teams finished second in last Saturday’s Maple Hill invitation.  The girls were led once again by Maggie Gordon who finished 2nd and Haley Chaykowski-Jewitt who finished 5th.  Kayla Hungerford, Allie Ryder and Sam Hebert also posted great times for Berlin.  The Boys were led by Nick Styer who finished 7th in a time of 17:03.  Ryan Gosse and Alex Flowers finished 13th and 14th respectively.[/private]
