More than 45 years ago a group of Hoosick Falls women with young families started gathering once a month to create crafts and do community projects. The group originally belonged to the NYS Home Bureau. Several years later they broke away from Home Bureau to become an independent group. [private]For a long time they met in one another’s homes. In recent years the group has been meeting at the Wood Park Apartments. Many of the original members still belong to the group. They enjoy the camaraderie, though their interest in crafts for their homes has diminished somewhat. One year the group made more that a dozen quilts for Project Linus, a nationwide group that gives “Linus” blankets to children in hospitals and a variety of “homes.” This year the group has decided to work on projects to benefit the local community.
At the next meeting on Thursday, October 8, at 7 pm, members will work on creating adorable little rabbits for children to hug when they have to go to the hospital in an ambulance. They will also be creating small cloth bags to be tied to wheelchairs at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation so patients can quickly reach tissues, cell phones and whatever else they wish to store in the compact bags.
New members are always welcome to join the group. Dues are $5 annually. Meetings are usually held the first Thursday of the month, from September through May, though the October meeting is a week later. The November meeting will be Thursday, November 5. In December the group will have a Christmas party and exchange handcrafted gifts. At that time they will also determine projects for the coming year.
