Hoosick Falls Central School’s “Fill The Bus” Food Drive Helps Local Food Pantry

October 15, 2015 By eastwickpress

HFCS Will Team Up With Hoosac, SMA For “Empty Bowls” in March

Caring for the community is one of the many values taught at Hoosick Falls Central School, and our students excel at it. Our student council is in the middle of the 5th annual ‘Fill the Bus’ project, collecting nonperishable food items and toiletries for our local food pantry.

Students in UPK through grade 12 are encouraged to bring the items to school now through October 16. On that date (HFCS Homecoming) the student council will fill an actual school bus with the donated goods and deliver them to The Hoosick Area Church Association (HACA) Food Pantry.

The HACA Food Pantry serves the greater Hoosick area by supplying food and toiletries to over 1,700 households a year. With the holidays approaching, there is going to be a greater need for food and goods.

HFCS Senior Heidi Bossoni, Co-President of the Student Council said, “this is so wonderful – it gets everyone involved through the entire school. Our community needs some help sometimes, and it is a good lesson for everyone on lending that helping hand.”

The Student Council is looking forward to another successful year of donations, and hoping to exceed the amount collected last year. Heidi adds, “we know this will benefit the community greatly, and we hope to raise more awareness about fighting hunger in our community.”

Looking ahead to 2016, the Hoosick Falls Central School District will be uniting with the other local schools to host the annual Empty Bowls event. HFCSD will team with Saint Mary’s Academy and Hoosac School to make the bowls and soup for the event to be held in the Hoosick Falls Jr.-Sr. High School Cafeteria in March 2016.

“The Art Department at Hoosac School is thrilled to be working in partnership with Hoosick Falls Central School and St. Mary’s Academy for this communal event” said Jason Jansen, Director of the Hoosac Arts program. “All three schools working together to benefit our local food pantry shows the incredible strength of our community and its continual commitment to helping each other” added Jansen. “This hands-on project teaches our students the importance of collaboration and service through the arts.”

Art teacher Megan Conner said, “I am incredibly excited to start working on our third Empty Bowls project here at Hoosick Falls. I love this project because it benefits both our students and the community.” She continued, “the kids get to enjoy making handmade bowls that will raise much needed money to fund local food pantries, the community comes together to share a homemade meal, and — perhaps most importantly — our students learn that they have the power to influence positive change within their communities by making and sharing their artwork.”[/private]
