Rensselaer Land Trust Opens Kinderhook Creek Nature Preserve In Nassau

October 8, 2015 By eastwickpress

Over 100 people attended the Kinderhook Creek Nature Preserve evergreen garland cutting ceremony including Mike Moore from the Governors Office, David Fleming, Jr. Supervisor for the Town of Nassau, and Mitch Levinn Mayor for the Village of East Nassau.  The 73 acre nature preserve was created from land donations from four neighbors:  David and Lucy Gaskell, Bob and Jennifer Newton, the late Kenneth York, and the Edward W. Golden Foundation.  [private]

Cutting the garland to deremonially open the new nature preserve are, left to right: David Gaskell, Lucy Gaskell, Ted Gutterman from the Edward W. Golden Foundation, Bob Newton, Jennifer Newton, Barbara York, Wendy York-Briggs, and Deborah Reiter. The last three are daughters of Kenneth York who donated the land.

These neighbors share the same vision and love of their land and the desire to provide a nature place for people and wildlife to enjoy.  This new preserve is a good example of how land conservation by a private organization benefits the entire community.

The preserve has over ½ mile of river frontage, steep hills, trails, mature forest, and wildlife habitat.  There is no charge to visit the preserve and Rensselaer Land Trust welcomes the public for fishing, hiking, skiing, geocaching, snowshoeing, horseback riding, and nature study.

Governor Andrew Cuomo wrote a letter saying “The Kinderhook Creek Nature Preserve is a wonderful addition to the community, incorporating a system of marked trails through picturesque wooded areas and highlighted by a half mile of shoreline along the Kinderhook Creek, a renowned trout stream.  This is a meaningful day for the Nassau community and its local residents whose significant donations of land will be appreciated by future generations.”

Rensselaer Land Trust’s mission is to conserve the open spaces, watersheds and natural habitats of Rensselaer County, for the benefit of our communities and future generations.   The Kinderhook Creek Nature Preserve is located at 300 Martha Hicks Road, Nassau, NY.
