Monday, July 18, 1836: We began to hay. I mowed and Mr. John Sackett mowed with me. He began his month’s work for house rent. Towards night Rausel Pierce accidently had his halter slip round his foot and his horse run and dragged him on the ground until the halter broke, but not very badly hurt.
[private]Wednesday: We hayed and said Sackett helped part of the day. Today my wife and Fanna Roberts went to Brother Simeon Wylie’s on a visit.
Monday, July 25: Today Mr. Amis Chapman began to work at haying for me to pay his house rent. I credit him one dol per day and he agrees to work only in fair weather.
Monday, August 1: Today we hayed on my Rodgers Farm and Mr. John Sackett helped towards his rent, and this afternoon a thunder shower and Mr. Hosea Brown had a barn burn with lightning.
Sunday: Today I went to the Shakers to meeting with my covered wagon and carried my wife and children.
Sunday, August 28: Today I went to Berlin to meeting at the Christian Chapel, Elder Spoor preached one sermon and Elder preached another sermon. This evening Elder Spoor preached to the Saturday meeting house and my wife and my four oldest children and Fanna Roberts all attended.
Tuesday, Sept. 6: I worked a getting up hay and finished. Said John Sackett helped and he said that it made him out 24 days works for rent and he said it paid me up for rent.
Friday, Sept. 9: I took my covered wagon and my wife with me. We carried cousin Samuel Potter and wife to the Shakers on a visit to visit the two daughters of the deceased Jol Potter and cousin Austin and wife met us there and visited together. We took dinner to the Shakers and I and my wife returned home. I called to G. Griggs Store and had three pounds nails charged for shingle nails and when I got home I found out they were not shingle nails and I laid them by to return. Old Mr. Scranton Sweet died in a fit of nightmare.
Saturday Sept: 17: This morning I rode to Lebanon. I paid twelve cts to Edwin Griggs store for one pint rum and I called over to Ludwick Babcock’s tavern and paid three cts for a drink bitters there I tried to bargain with the company of the circus what to pay them for my family but could not bargain any under price and I returned home. This afternoon I took my covered wagon and carried my wife and two oldest daughters and my two sons to Lebanon to Ludwick Babcock’s to the circus performance. I paid fifty cents apiece for myself, wife and daughters and 25 cts apiece for my two sons which makes two dol and fifty cts I paid out for the whole.[/private]
