A Thaw Makes Sledding Difficult

December 24, 2015 By eastwickpress

Monday, January 30, 1837: I tended to chores and moved straw in the barn and this afternoon I took my double sleigh and carried a grist of rye and corn to the Shakers’ mill and left to be ground. My two oldest daughters and Jane Wylie went with me for a sleigh ride.

[private]Tuesday: I went into my swamp with my two-horse team to draw wood home and it was quite thawy. My horses slumped in and that frightened them and they crowded so bad that I only drew home one small load of wood.

Thursday, February 2: My wife went along to Hiram Newton’s on an evening visit. I rode from there up to Amos Chapman’s. On the way home I called to said Hiram Newton’s for my wife and while I was in the house my old sorrel started and came home. I had to walk home and then return back after my wife.

Friday: This morning I found my old sow dead in the pen. I know not how or what was the cause of the swine dying, and this evening I took my cutter and carried my wife and two oldest daughters and Jane Wylie over to the Select School house to meeting, a woman preached, by the name of Moll Thompson.

Monday: On this evening I took my cutter and carried my wife and two sons to meeting to the Select School house near E. Cherevoy’s to hear the before-mentioned woman preach, by the name of Moll Thompson, quite a crowd of people.[/private]
