Elton Warren Maxon

Berlin – Elton Warren Maxon, 92, died Monday, February 15, 2016 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, VT.  Born in Berlin on August 22, 1923, he was the son of the late Gordon and Beatrice Goodermote Maxon.  He was the husband of the late Margaret Veldran Maxon who died in 2010.   Margaret and Elton were married April 11, 1944 at the Berlin Methodist Church.  He was educated in the Berlin School District.

[private]Ob-Maxon-wHe enlisted in the US Army on January 18, 1943 and was honorably discharged on December 30, 1945.  He served in the 751st Field Artillery at Camp Bowie Texas.  Elton served in England, Scotland, Wales, and in the European Theater participating in the Battle of the Bulge and the Liberation of Paris.  He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Major Campaign Stars, European Theater Medal, Victory Medal and a Presidential Citation.

He was employed by the Rutland Railroad, Henry Seagroatts, and Ludlow Value in Troy. He worked for 35 years as a foreman in the Enamel Department for W.J. Cowee Co., Inc.,  retiring in 1985.

Elton enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and wood carving.

He was a member of Berlin Fire Department, Captain of Berlin Rescue Squad, and he served as a Republican Committeeman. He served on the Berlin Town Board for 8 years and as Town Justice for 20 years.   Elton was a member of the Berlin Rod and Gun Club, the Rod and Reel Club, and the Petersburgh and Berlin Senior Citizens.  He was awarded Senior of the Year in 1989. He was also a member of the Taconic Valley Legion Post # 937 for 65 years.

He is survived by his two sons, David (Sally) Maxon of Laurens, SC and Danny (Rose) Maxon of Cumberland WI and his sister, Ruth Church of Hoosick Falls.  He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.  He was predeceased by his brothers, Loyal Maxon of Berlin and Rodney Maxon of CO, and his sister Hazel Cinney of Troy.

The funeral service was held Saturday February 20 at 2 pm at the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home in Peterburgh with Pastor Keith Smith officiating.  Interment followed in Meadowlawn Cemetery in Petersburgh.  Relatives and friends called at the funeral home prior to the service.   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Berlin Rescue Squad, PO Box 269, Berlin, NY  12022.  Condolence book at ParkerBrosMemorial.com.[/private]
