After a tough loss to league leading Germantown and an upset by Hawthorne Valley, the Berlin Boys came out strong this past week blasting by both opponents they faced.  [private]

First to fall was Mt. Everett High School of Sheffield, Massachusetts.  The Eagles were quickly grounded by Berlin’s balanced attack, led by Sophomore Captain Roark Slattery’s 21 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists.  Slattery fell just two assists shy of his first ever triple-double.  Sophomore Ryan Willis contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds to the Mountaineer’s 70-47 victory.   Sophomore Tyler Kellar scored the first seven points of his varsity career.

Senior Night Was Special

For Ryan Shumway

Berlin returned to Central Hudson Valley League play two nights later on the annual senior night, and for Senior Captain Ryan Shumway, it was his turn to shine.  Always one of the team’s leaders, Shumway took it up another notch before the home crowd, scoring a career high 25 points to go along with 6 assists and 4 steals.  Shumway was hot from downtown, netting 5 of his 6 three point attempts, leading the Mountaineers past Doane Stuart 78-42.  Sophomore Ryan Willis recorded his tenth double-double of the season, knocking down 23 points and 15 rebounds.  Roark Slattery added 16 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.  Berlin Coach Kasson Sauer had high praise as well for Ryan Gosse, Dylan Kellar and Hunter Harrison.  He told The Eastwick Press “each contributed to the win with tough defense and exceptional team play.”

A Busy Week For The Lady Mountaineers

Berlin’s Girls Basketball squad had three contests this past week.  They opened play by avenging an earlier loss to non-league foe St. Joe’s of Pittsfield by the score of 34-32.  Maggie Gordon led all scorers with 15 points, while Tiffany Foley followed with 6 points and Cassie Bentley with 5.  Coach Fleda Berschwinger described the win as “an excellent team effort.”

One night later the Girls traveled to CHVL opponent Waterford, dropping a hard-fought game to the Fordians 37-32.  At one point the Lady Mountaineers were down 19 to 5 but battled back to tie the game at 32, before Waterford scored the final five points.  Maggie Gordon again led Berlin’s trio of scorers with 12 points.  Tiffany Foley netted 7 and Cassie Bentley another 5.

Last up for Berlin was league-leading Emma Willard.  Overmatched and perhaps a bit tired, the Girls fell to the Troy-based private school 32-13.  Maggie Gordon led Berlin’s scoring with 11 points.

Taking Part In A Four-State Meet

Last Saturday the Berlin Wrestling team traveled over the border to Williamstown, Massachusetts to take part in the 24th Annual Mountie Tournament.  Host school Mt. Greylock entertained teams from Massachusetts, New York, Vermont and Rhode Island.  In all, 22 teams took to the four mats.  Berlin’s Steven Mallory and Michael Hicks each posted preliminary round pins with Hicks also posting a pin against the second-seeded wrestler from Fair Haven, Vermont in the next round.

Swim Season Is Coming To A Close

The season is nearly over for the combined New Lebanon-Berlin swim team.  They did not fare well in their last meet against Pittsfield’s St. Joe’s.  This Saturday the swimmers compete in individual competitions at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.[/private]
