Alva J. Vincent

Berlin – Alva J. Vincent, 98, died Saturday evening, March 12, 2016 at his home in Berlin.  Born in Berlin on September 16, 1917, he was the son of the late Jesse and Tressa Deyoe Vincent.  He was educated in Berlin and was a resident his entire life.  

[private]vincent alvaWHe was employed by the Rutland Railroad as a brakeman for many years, W.J. Cowee Co. Inc. and Seagroatts Wholesale Florist.  In 1950, Alva started the Vincent Trucking Co. of Berlin which he owned and operated for 33 years before retiring in 1988.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Berlin.  He loved the trucking business and trains and loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle until his early 80’s.  He loved a good church dinner where he could socialize and enjoyed his Wednesday afternoon luncheons at Gardner’s in Stephentown.

He was the beloved husband of the late Evelyn Appenzeller Vincent who died in 1999; devoted father of the late A. James Vincent who died in 2013; father in law of Margery Vincent of Berlin; proud grandfather of Wendy (Matthew) Smith of Greenwich, James P. (Peggy) Vincent of Berlin and Matthew Vincent of White Creek; great grandfather of Michael, Amanda, Becky, Lori and Nathan; dear brother of the late Elmer, Wayne and Ralph Vincent and Betty Huff.  He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, March 16 at 1 pm at the United Methodist Church in Berlin with Pastor Joy Lowenthal officiating.  Interment followed in the Center Berlin Cemetery.  Relatives and friends called at the United Methodist Church in Berlin on Tuesday evening.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, PO Box 225, Berlin, NY 12022.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home in Petersburgh.  Condolence book may be found at ParkerBrosMemorial. [/private]
