Hazards: The Man Burned, the Cow Hooked

April 14, 2016 By eastwickpress

Tuesday, November 21, 1837: This morning the wife of Rensselear Humphrey died with consumption.

Wednesday: I went to the funeral of Mrs. Betsey Humphrey. Elder Maxon preached at the Baptist Meeting House at Lebanon Springs.

[private]Thursday: Today Mr. Alonzo Rodgers worked for me about 3/4 of a day. He ground paint and prepared for painting and then he worked at the making of the bedroom smaller to have a recess for a place to set a bed in the south room, and I helped take down the  partition, and I painted an oil cloth for to put under the stove.  I went down south as far as Mr. Morey’s to look for a swine that went away yesterday, but could not find the hog.

Saturday: Quite a snow storm. I got home my lame horse from my Rodgers farm, and this evening I painted our south room.

Sunday: Today I took my cutter and rode to Mr. Corey’s and from there to Mr. Taylor’s, inquiring for my lost hog.

Wednesday, Nov 29: I drew two loads of wood to the school house and one load home from my Rodgers farm.

Thursday: On Monday evening 27th Garret Hires was burned to death in a cabin at a coal pit of Elem Andrews.

Wednesday Dec 6: This morning I chopped wood to the school house and I walked over to my Rodgers barn to see one of my cows that had been hooked in her guts. Today I plowed sward.  Today Phila Nigh came and reckoned with me for her summer’s work, which was 25 weeks at one dol per week. I had paid her to Henry Platt’s store for a pair of shoes 5/6 and paid her to rice’s store 3/6 pence, and I paid her today twenty three dollars and 75 cts cash which pays her up and we are even.

Saturday: Today Alonzo Rodgers came and worked for me making a clothes press at the head of my bed and plastering for the same. Today I lathed up one side of our recess and mixed morter. I paid Rowland Danford 25 cts for half a bushel of lime.

Monday: Mr. Daniel Kites skinned a cow for me that died on Saturday in my Rodgers barn. The cow died of a hook in side which let her entrail out into a bunch but not the skin broke, only a small hole. The cow had been hooked about four weeks, and I credited said Kites one dollar for skinning my cow.[/private]
