Lady Mountaineers Post Their First Victory In CHVL Play Varsity Softball Team Continues To Show Improvement

April 21, 2016 By eastwickpress

It was a tough start for the Berlin Girls softball team with a couple of lopsided losses, but Coach Art Schmich’s charges have been working hard, and it’s starting to show.   Berlin posted its first win of the season with a 24 to 9 decision over Doane Stuart.  Amanda Despart pitched the entire game for Berlin, striking out three.  [private]

Destiny Lavenia Watson was the hitting star of the game, getting on board five times.  Haley Maxon added a triple in the victory.  After a rough outing against the Germantown Clippers, where Destiny Lavenia Watson had two hits and scored the Lady Mountaineers lone run, the team bounced back with a spirited effort in a loss to the Heatly Hornets.  A rematch with the New Lebanon Tigers saw Berlin jump out to an early 4 to 3 lead, only to see the Tigers offensive put up 10 runs between the 5th and 6th innings.  Berlin mounted a scoring spree of their own in the bottom of the 6th, plating another 6 runs.  The comeback fell just short, with New Lebanon posting a 13 to 10 win.  Amanda Despart again went the distance on the mound, Cassie Bentley collecting two hits with two runs scored.  Haley Maxon continued her power hitting, with a double and crossed the plate twice herself.  Coach Schmich is pleased with their development at the plate, but said defensively, “errors continue to be their demise throughout the game.”

The Berlin Boys baseball squad continues to search for its first victory of the season, dropping a contest to Heatly’s Hornets this past week, 12 to 3.  Juniors Michael Hicks, Garrett  Fiske, Matt Dundas and Chris Houle all collected a hit in the game, with Hicks driving in two of the Mountaineer’s three runs.[/private]
