Travels In The Pung

April 21, 2016 By eastwickpress

Thursday, December 14, 1837: This forenoon I regulated my stoves and mixed some mortar for different places and in particular to mend my oven and potash kettle in my cheese house and this afternoon I carried all my cheese from my cheese house up into our south chamber to keep them from freezing.

[private]Friday: This morning I took my pung and carried my children to school and went to brother Simeon Wylie’s and got his buck sheep to run with mine and today I went with my pung and carried my wife to Squ Nathan Howard’s and left her on a visit and went on to Hancock to Mr. Amos Chapman to see when he would make my boots that he cut out last winter to make. He had made use of my leather and agreed to come to my house tomorrow and go with me to the Shakers and buy more leather.

Saturday: This forenoon Asa Sheldon and Platt Wylie butchered my beef and took their pay in beef. This afternoon I went to the Shakers with my pung and carried my two hides, the one that the cow died by the hook in the entrails, weight 56 pounds, and the beef hide, 73 pounds. I had 5 cents credited me per pound, which paid up my account of four dollars and twelve cents and a balance due to me of two dollars and 33 cts which Mr Amos Chapman went with me and bought leather of said Jonathan Wood. On the way home said Chapman and I called to cousin Amos Broad’s and took supper. We got home about nine this evening and Chapman went home.

Sunday: Today a snow squall.

Tuesday: This evening I took my pung and carried my wife and daughter Angeline to Hancock to Mr. Amos Chapman’s for an evening visit and we took tea there and I got my new cow hide boots. Said Chapman finished them today, he began them last winter and this evening I walked from said Chapman’s up to Wm Hadsell’s store and paid 50 cts for Webster’s Dictionary.[/private]
