GHS Program On Lillian Gish

May 5, 2016 By eastwickpress

The Grafton Historical Society program will be held May 18 at the Grafton Town Hall at 7 pm.  Phyllis Chapman will present the program “Lillian Gish: Star of the Silent Screen” Miss Gish was not only a pioneer in the development of the “movies” as we know them today.  [private]As a child actress in traveling theater and vaudeville at the turn of the twentieth century through her stage and film career, she was a major player in the establishment of a new art form, quite different from the stage. Her collaboration with director DW Griffith was as experimental and formative as it was controversial.  Dedicating her life to her work, she persevered in perfecting the subtlety that film acting requires, as well as expanding her understanding of lighting, direction, and editing. Miss Gish explains how “moving pictures” came into existence, and its subsequent influence on American life and art.
The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.[/private]
