It was Grange Night and Food Pantry Night on April 27. Master David Cornell presided over the meeting. He brought up the price of oil and what we paid and the current price, and ordered more oil. It was brought up about the water at the hall, and it was tested and evaluated and will have a carbon filter put in next week. It was also discussed whether we would do a float and ideas are wanted. [private]The Lecturer had a basket for collecting money for the Food Closet. She read about the amount of money the Food Closet spent buying food last year. She also read how many baskets they do at Thanksgiving time and how much food was donated by people and organizations.
The Lecturer’s program was titled “Spring.” She started with February – Heart Month. She told some facts about the heart: An adult heart pumps up to five quarts of blood each minute and 2,000 gallons a day. It pumps 55-70% of its volume with every beat, unless quickened by love or stress, and beats about 100,000 times a day. We are wonderfully made.
In March, the lecturer told about Chicago, Illinois. They put vegetable color in the river to make it green for St. Patrick’s Day – 100 pounds of color. It lasted a week and they found out later that 25 pounds would have done it. In April, because farmers spread manure about this time, she offered manure slogans: Rated M for Manure; Manure you can handle; Nature called – it wants its nutrients back; Our grass is greener; and Where no one stands behind their product.
Next was Easter – Henney Penney goes to church. The Lecturer read about 12 children in Sunday school. They were asked where eggs came from. They answered bunnies, and white bunnies lay chocolate eggs. This is how she set them straight. She brought a setting bantam hen with eggs about to hatch, and let them see the chicks hatch out of their shells. She told about the problems. Hot and Cold Weather – time for colds.
The Lecturer had a song she wrote to the music of Inki Dinke Parlavou. They sang it – Cover your mouth whenever you cough- Sing Parlavou; Cover your nose whenever you sneeze- Sing Parlavou; Cover your mouth, your nose and your sneeze- use a tissue your shoulder your sleeve- Inki Dinke Parlavou. There were several more verses. Then we come to June – The Lecturer had a camping story about a woman who was old-fashioned and quite delicate in her language, and didn’t want to say toilet. She wrote the campground and referred to the toilet as B.C., a bathroom commode. This was very funny. See what you miss by not being a Granger. The Lecturer had a game and a closing thought: When you appreciate the little things in life, it’s easy to be happy.
