Robert Hayes, Sr.

Petersburgh – J. Robert (Bob) Hayes Sr. passed away on May 13, 2016 at the age of 86. He passed peacefully in his home, surrounded by his children. [private]Ob-Hayes-wHe is survived by his four children, Deborah, Michael, Bob Jr., and Billy; their spouses, Max Stone, Jean Hayes and Mo Hayes; his grandchildren, Lily, Mia, Wyatt, Will and Owen Hayes; and his sister, Margaret Mulcahy. He was was pre-deceased by his siblings William Patrick Hayes and Nancy Elizabeth Gusty and his beloved wife of 44 years, Carol “Chickie” Hayes.
Bob was born in Troy, NY in 1929 to William Hayes and Margaret Noonan. He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and Lansingburgh High School in Troy, NY, graduating in 1948.
Bob worked at the family business, Troy Spring Works, before enlisting in the military. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1953 following active duty in the Korean Conflict where he served on the USS Siboney aircraft carrier as an Aviation Electrician’s Mate.
Following his military service, Bob graduated from Siena College in 1960 with a degree in sociology. He worked as both a probation and parole officer before joining Troy Housing Authority where he served as Executive Director until his retirement. In 1970, Bob and Chickie moved to the town of Petersburgh where they raised their family and he lived for 46 years. He enjoyed spending his summers at the Great Sacandaga Lake.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, brother and friend, Bob is remembered for his gentle nature, kindness, and generosity. More than anything, Bob’s sense of humor will be missed. He takes with him an unmistakable laugh that will leave a void in the hearts of all of us who loved him dearly.
Calling hours were held at the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon, May 15, and the funeral followed on Monday May 16 at 11 am at the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home in Petersburgh. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor may be made to the Petersburgh Rescue Ambulance Squad.
