Berlin – Walter Doty, Jr., 86, passed away peacefully at his Berlin home on Wednesday evening, April 27, 2016. Born in Hudson, Walter was the son of the late Walter Doty, Sr. and the late Sophia Piesta Doty.
Walter was an avid outdoorsman who loved to go boating, take motorcycle rides, and go out hunting. While these hobbies filled him with much joy, it was his service to our country during the Korean War that filled him with much pride.[private]
Upon returning home from the war, Walter began painting and working on cars at Deno’s Autobody in Hudson. He then moved on to working for his son-in-law at DeBrino Caulking Association in Castleton.
Walter is survived by his loving wife, Betty Roberts Doty, of Berlin, with whom he shared 26 years of marriage. He is survived also by his seven children; Rosemary Hotaling of Hudson, Bettyann (Lewis) Houghtaling of Columbiaville, Carolann (Joseph) Lazzara of Hudson, Walter (Mary Leffler) Doty, III. of Averill Park, Robert (Joan Burns) Doty of Petersburgh, Michelle (Bennay) Gansowski of Churchtown, NY, and Kimberly (Gregory) Albery of Valatie. Walter’s memory also lives on in two siblings; Anna Tomasitz of Hudson, and Frederick (Shirley) Doty of Claverack, NY, and two step-children; Robert (Cammie) Fix, Jr. of Niverville, NY, and Michael (Lynn Oliveri) Fix of Hudson. Also surviving are many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by two siblings and an adoring grandson; Helen Stevenson, Joseph Doty, and Lewis Houghtaling, IV.
A memorial gathering was held on Thursday afternoon, May 5, from 1 to 6 pm at the Hudson Boat Club on River Street in Hudson, NY.
