Winter Brings Two Deaths

Saturday December 23, 1837: Today cousin Samuel Holcomb and wife and Elijah Howard and wife came and made us a visit. I paid said Howard my taxes which was nine dol and 45 cts.

[private]Sunday: I called to Mr. John Russel’s to see his sick wife and daughter Margaret, they are both sick with a fever.

Monday, Dec 25: I drew four loads of wood from my swamp.

Tuesday: I drew three loads of wood from my swamp.

Friday: This forenoon I chopped and drew a load of wood from my swamp. This afternoon I took my double sleigh and I carried my daughter Charlotte to Nicholas Gardner’s and left her for a visit

Sunday: I took my double sleigh and carried my wife and Lucinda Clemmons and part of my children to the Baptist meeting house to the funeral of Elijah Howard’s child at the age of 15 months, a son. It bled to death by a scratch in the mouth. Elder Jones preached. The child died on Friday morning.

Tuesday, January 2, 1838: On this evening I walked over to Mr. John Russel’s to come home with my wife. Maryette Russel lies very dangerous sick and all hopes given up of her ever to get well.

Wednesday: Today I took my wagon and horses and chopped and drew a load of alder from my swamp. On the way going over I called to Mr. John Russel’s a spell for his daughter Maryette died this morning with a fever. My wife went and stayed all day to Mr. Russel’s.

Thursday: Today I went with my double wagon and carried my wife and family to the funeral of Maryette Russel at the Seventh Day meeting house, Elder Jones preached, my daughter Charlotte was one of the pall bearers. There was a very large concourse of people tended the funeral.[/private]
