Wintertime, 1837

May 12, 2016 By eastwickpress

Saturday, January 6, 1837: This morning I had my son Geo P ride to Lebanon to N. Nichols Store and get one pint 1/2 gin and a vial of paregoric and had it charged. I got for Lucinda Clemmons to take and the gin for a syrup for her. Today I moved my cheese from my south chamber, the stove pipe was too warm, it melted them and made them crack standing up on edge.  I put them in oats flat down three deep in my north chamber.[private]Wednesday, January 10: Today I took my pung and carried my wife and Lucinda Clemmons to brother Simeon Wylie’s on a visit for all day and took dinner and supper and we left L. Clemmons there, her health is quite poor and a cough.
Friday: Today I took my single wagon and carried my wife to cousin Jesse Egleston’s on a visit to see my aged Aunt Nabba or Abbagail, she lies blind and bed ridden.
Saturday: On this evening we visited to Nathan Beers, the son of brother Samuel and on the way today going we called to Howard’s Post Office and I took out a letter for myself and one for sister Eleanor, both from brother Wm, favored by Joseph Barnhart being at his house and when he returned he mailed the letters at Hoosic Falls, the postage six cts each, but I did not pay the postage, this being the first letter that I had received from him since he left Stephentown, and he directed me to direct the letters that I send to him to Lodi Persia post office in Cataragus County, NY. I called to cousin Samuel Holcomb and I agreed with him to engage me the Troy Budget for six months.
Tuesday: Today I carried part of our meat that we smoked to the widow Wylie’s and put in their smoke house to be smoked, and today I wrote a letter to brother William to answer the one that I had from him date Jan 2.
Thursday I went on to my Rodgers Farm to plow sward but the frost was in the ground in spots and I quit and chopped and drew home a load of alders for fire wood.[private]
