It was the week of Memorial Day and Master David Cornell presided over the meeting on May 25. Donations for the three prizes at the Hoosick Falls Central School, and donations to NY State Grange were taken care of. Other business and delegates to State Grange were brought up.
[private]Martha Babbitt was in charge of the Lecturer’s program. Natalie Ryan read the poem “In Flanders Fields.” Corinne Philpott read who wrote the poem. It was a young Canadian military doctor, who saw his friend killed and was asked to conduct the burial service. This is when he started to draft the famous poem.
Then Martha had a number of Grangers read quotes from famous Americans, and we guessed who said them. She also had some jokes read. Martha made the statement that Memorial Day is not Veteran’s Day – then she read the history of Memorial Day and what it’s all about. It started out as Decoration Day after the Civil War in 1868, and later emerged as Memorial Day and all Americans were honored. Memorial Day remembers the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. Military veterans.
Martha told about Arthritis and the different kinds. Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Gouty Arthritis. She told us the differences, the signs and the symptons. The lecturer thanked Martha for a very interesting program.
Our next meeting is on June 8, and is Dairy Princess Night. We will have our newest dairy princess, Natalie Schudt from Valley Falls with us. All our welcomed to come and meet her.
The refreshment committee is Berta Burr.[/private]
