Jury Duty

June 2, 2016 By eastwickpress

Sunday, March 18, 1838: Today nearly noon I started for Troy. I was summoned to Circuit Court as a juror and I walked on foot. On the way I called in Nassau to cousin Chauncy Row and took tea. I then walked on to Greenbush at the small village of Wynantskill to Avril’s Tavern and stayed tonight. I had bitters and crackers.

[private]Monday: This morning I paid my bill after having bitters and crackers to Avril’s which was 20 cts. I then walked to Troy. I went and engaged my board to a boarding house kept by Thomas Withee at two dol and fifty cts per. He lives near the middle market and I went into court about ten o’clock. The court only organized and called the Grand and petty jurors. This afternoon I returned to the court but was not called for.

Tuesday: I returned into court at half past eight in the morning. Today I sat on eight juries and got two dol, all on notes of hand.

Wednesday: I sat on two juries, one was a note of hand and the other was a case of an assault and battery case, obtained by the plaintiff of a verdict of seventy five dollars. I got 50 cts.

Thursday: I set on three juries and got 75 cts.

Friday: This morning when the court opened the judge gave me a discharge on account of my deafness and bad cold. The first judge, his name John M. Cush, and I returned from the court half past ten to my boarding house and paid up my bill, which was one dol and seventy five cts and made ready for home. I paid four cents for three oranges and started out of Troy about eleven o’clock. I walked.  I called to Knight’s Tavern and got a glass of beer and two crackers and paid five cts. I then came on to Sand Lake and took tea to Rufus Withee’s. I then walked home. I called to what is called Chase’s old stand and I had a glass gin and two crackers and paid five cents. I got home about eight this evening.

Saturday, March 31: Today I paid Beriah Wylie 47 dollars cash, which makes up the whole amount of his four month wages for keeping our District School. I advanced him his pay before I called at the school tax on account of his returning home today. Said Beriah took my single wagon and rode to the post office on pool hill and called to N. Nichols store and I had a bottle pepper sauce charged which was 25 cts and he had the money I paid him inspected and was pronounced good as any eastern money[/private]
