William B. Sweet, Jr.

Berlin – William B. Sweet, Jr., 81, died peacefully at his home on Friday, June 3, 2016 with his family at his side.  Born in Pittsfield, MA on September 23, 1934, he was the son of the late William B. and Evelyn Huff Sweet, Sr.  Bill was raised in Stephentown and Berlin by his grandparents and was a graduate of Berlin High School.   He was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War serving aboard the carrier, the USS Antietam as a radar operator for the flight squadron.

[private]sweetBill returned home and joined the New York State Police as a State Trooper serving in Plattsburgh, New Lebanon and Troop G in Loudonville before retiring.  He then worked construction for Callahan Industries and Rifenburg Construction for many years.

He was a member of the Berlin Rod & Gun Club.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, building model airplanes and mowing all the lawns in his neighborhood.  He was an avid New York Yankee fan.

He was the husband of the late Beverly Y. Harnett Sweet who died in 2002; devoted father of Donald W. Sweet of Berlin and the late David W. Sweet; proud grandfather of Becca and Aaron Sweet; brother of Gayle (Freddy) Jordan of Pittsfield, MA and the late Wayne Sweet.  He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held on Tuesday June 7 at noon at the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home in Stephentown, with Rev. Trygve Tomlinson officiating.  Interment followed in Berlin Community Cemetery.  Relatives and friends called at the funeral home on Monday afternoon.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Community Hospice, 310 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, NY  12208.
