This Week At Stephentown Memorial Library…

Summer Hours at SML – Saturday hours will be 9 am – 1 pm for the summer months. You asked for earlier hours and we heard you. We are always trying to be responsive to our patrons.

Mahjongg Lessons for Beginners – (Experienced players welcome, too!) Would you like to learn the ancient Chinese game of Mahjongg? Do you enjoy card games, chess, backgammon? Then you may love mahjongg. Research has shown that this fascinating game stimulates the mind and helps keep your brain sharp[private]SML is hosting a series of five lessons on Thursday afternoons from 4 to 6 pm (the first one was July 21). Suggested donation is $20 for the series. Each player must also purchase a 2016 National Mahjongg League card for $8. (Available from the instructor at the first class). The series is limited to 8 beginners. No one will be turned away for inability to pay. Please contact the Library to reserve your place. Questions? Call Linda Smith at (518) 248-1111 or the Library.

Meet SouthPaw of the ValleyCats – Monday, July 25 at 10:30 am. The visit will include an appearance by one or two players and SouthPaw, the ValleyCats mascot. Kids will have an opportunity to learn a bit about the game of baseball and chat with a player. All are welcome and no reservations are required.

Story Laurie – Groovin’ in the Garden – Wednesday, July 27 at 10:30 am. Gardeners, bookworms and kid community heroes all meet up in Story Laurie’s highly original musical storytelling adventure, Groovin’ in the Garden. Your family will love singing (and buzzing!) along in this fun performance about a group of kids working together to grow their community.

Barry Keegan, Specialist in Native American Crafts and Traditions – Thursday, July 28 at 10:30 am, under the SML Tent. Join us as we welcome Barry Keegan, who will demonstrate Native American skills such as flint knapping and fire building. An expert in his field, Barry has been teaching people of all ages these primitive skills for over 25 years. Barry will bring with him clothing, spears, fish trap, bows, arrows, harpoons, baskets, artifact cases for all to examine and learn about. Registration is appreciated.

National Teen Lock-in Event – Game On! – Friday, July 29, 7 to Midnight. All teens age 13 to 18 are welcome! Parent consent form is required for participation – Forms available at the library. Participants must be at the library and signed in by 7 pm on Friday, 7/31 and picked up and signed out by Midnight. Come in costume as your favorite Sports Star and compete for prizes. Meet teens from around the country with activities that include games, Minecraft tournament, Skype, Movie showing, food and fun.

Free Breakfast & Lunch for kids – July 11 through August 5. We are pleased to have been chosen as a feeding site for this federally funded program. We will be serving a healthy breakfast and lunch each weekday. Breakfast will be from 8:30 to 9:30 am and Lunch will be from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in the community room. There is no charge and no income or residency requirement. All children under age 18 are encouraged to take advantage of this program.
