Commemoration To Mark The 239th Anniversary Of The Battle Of Bennington

August 4, 2016 By eastwickpress

Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site, located on Route 67, North Hoosick, NY will host a commemoration of the Battle of Bennington on Tuesday, August 16, at 7 pm.

[private] commemoration will include a salute from the 2nd Continental Regiment of Artillery and representatives from the Hoosick Township Historical Society as well as the SAR and DAR. Speakers in period clothing will share both original writings and those of battle participants. In addition to honoring the valor and sacrifice of Americans who fought for freedom at the site, visitors will have the opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of the area in which the Battle took place and learn more about the battle itself and the events leading up to the battle.

The battle, which occurred 239 years ago, was a decisive American victory and much needed morale booster following American losses at the Battle of Hubbardton, Vermont just a few weeks earlier in July. It severely disrupted British plans to divide American forces and put British General John Burgoyne on the back foot leading up to the Battles of Saratoga. The event is open to the public at no charge.

CommemorationCeremonywebVisitors to the battlefield are encouraged to travel into Vermont to the Battle Monument in nearby Bennington which will be celebrating its 125th Anniversary this summer.
