2nd Annual Richard P. Whalen Memorial Golf Scramble

September 29, 2016 By eastwickpress

By Gail Smith

The 2nd Annual Richard P. Whalen Memorial Scholarship Golf Scramble was just as fun and fruitful as the first. [private]Nine teams embarked on the Hoosick Falls Country Club to honor beloved family member, friend and respected community member, Judge Richard Whalen, who passed away suddenly last spring.

We would especially like to thank Mike Barratto for his assistance and the Country Club and Jeff Babson for a job well done, as always! Thanks to the participants and those who volunteered their time, the many individuals and businesses who donated prizes, and those who made monetary contributions and purchased tickets to help the cause.

We would like to recognize Gail Morin, Kay Powers and Joyce Brewer for their help and Elaine Harwood and Peggy Cottrell for their amazing efforts in selling auction and raffle tickets. Without any one of those I’ve mentioned, the day would not have been as successful or run as smoothly.

Winners of the tourney were Tim, Matt and George Smith with a score of 25, just 1/4 of a point ahead of Jim Henry, Kevin O’Malley and Don and Chris Bradley. The winning team is pictured with our honoree’s beloved family members Kevin and Joyce Whalen.

The Smiths will have their names engraved on the commemorative plaque that hangs at the Country Club. Though they won first place in golf, Gerry McAuliffe was the clear winner in the prize category, with Joan James second. These folks didn’t play golf, but they did take home a disproportionate number of Chinese Auction prizes. The key to Gerry’s success, “Just buy more tickets!”

Due to the generosity of all of those involved, it was another wonderful day and successful event.

The golf scramble was sponsored by Joyce and Kevin Whalen and Voice of a Vet. We are looking forward to awarding the Honorable Richard P. Whalen Memorial Scholarship to deserving Town of Hoosick graduating Seniors in June.[/private]
