Petersburgh – Joseph P. Hammersmith, 89, of Petersburgh, passed peacefully on Monday morning, October 3. Born in Cherry Plain, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Alfreda Gagnon Hammersmith.[private] Joseph was the local handyman who many people would reach out to for help. Whether it was a tractor, lawnmower, or car, there wasn’t an engine problem too challenging for him.
He parlayed these skills into a career as a mechanic with the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation. Although he thoroughly enjoyed being able to help so many people, nothing made him more proud than being able to serve his country in the United States Army during World War II. Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Irma Yerden Hammersmith of Petersburgh, and by their daughter; Lois (Brian Clark) Whitman of Wynantskill. His memory also lives on in his grandson, Christopher Whitman, his special niece, Sally Smith, his foster son, Joseph Rock, and by many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 3 brothers; Alfreda Gardner, Mary Schouller, Theresa Williamson, and William, John, and David Hammersmith. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 6 at 10 am at Brookside Cemetery in Poestenkill. Condolence book at parkerbrosmemorial.com.[/private]
