Grafton House Suffers Heavy Damage In Sunday Night Fire

December 15, 2016 By eastwickpress

By Doug La Rocque

Fire companies from all around Eastern Rensselaer County joined Grafton firefighters to battle a very smoky and very hot blaze on the east side of the Town on Sunday night December 11.  [private]Grafton Fire Chief Jim Goyer said he called for the assistance because of fears the older wooden structure might literally burst into an inferno.

The volunteers however, made what Chief Goyer called “another good save.”  With the exception of some windows and doors, the outside of the structure remains pretty much intact.  The interior however, suffered extensive smoke and heat damage.

Despite the smoke, Chief Goyer said there were no injuries.  As of Monday night, fire investigators were leaning toward a fan placed next to a wood stove as the cause of the blaze.  It is believed it shorted out and sparked the fire. In addition to the Grafton Fire Department and Rescue Squad, departments from Petersburgh, Berlin, Hoosick, Raymertown, Pittstown, Eagle Mills and Center Brunswick also responded to the mutual aid call.[/private]
