Berlin Mountaineers Post Two CHVL League Wins

Boys Combined Swim Team Records Its First Win Of The Year

The Berlin Boys’ Basketball team scored 29 points in the 4th quarter to come from behind to sting the Heatly Hornets last Friday night by a 63-60 score, in a match played in Green Island.  [private]Trailing 42-34 after 3 quarters of play, the Mountaineers outscored Heatly by 11 in the final stanza behind the 24-point effort of Ryan Willis, who tossed down 12 field goals, and Roark Slattery’s 16 points.  Ryan Gosse added another 11 points and Josh Hendricks 10.  Earlier in the week Berlin topped Hawthorne Valley in their only home game.

Roark Slattery led the scoring this time for the Mountaineers with 29 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double.  Ryan Willis had 21 points and 12 rebounds as well for his double-double.  Ryan Gosse contributed 10 points in the victory while Hunter Harrison had nine more.  The two wins move Berlin’s Central Hudson Valley League record to 5-2.

The New Lebanon Tigers Boys’ basketball dropped a pair of games to the league’s top two teams, falling on Tuesday to Bishop Maginn 83-61. Brandon Caul led the way for the Tigers with 9 field goals and 23 points. Clayton Erickson had another 15 for New Lebanon, and Brandon Napoli recorded 6 points.  Friday night the Tigers fell to the Germantown Clippers by a 60-35-point margin.  Brandon Caul recorded 11 points in the loss, Brandon Napoli had 8 and Mike Sawyer 6.

The Berlin Girls Basketball team lost its only match of the week to Heatly 45-19.  Haley Maxon had ten points for the Lady Mountaineers. Their match on the road against Hawthorne Valley was postponed by a leaky gym roof. Coach Fleda Berschwinger said, “my young team is still struggling to put the ball in the basket.”  The Lady Tigers split their two contests this past week. They topped Bishop Maginn 49-30.  Ashley Tynan recorded 6 field goals and 15 points in that game, and Stephanie Feathers had three triples and 10 points, while Sierra Putnam had 7 points.  New Lebanon fell to Germantown by a 37-31 margin.  Ashley Tynan again led the way for the Lady Tigers with 13 points, while Sierra Putnam had 8 and Stephanie Feathers another 5.

The Berlin Boys Volleyball team dropped a pair of home league matches this week, falling first to the Cobleskill-Richmondville Bulldogs 24-26, 16-25 and 16-25.  Phil Doin had 5 service points and 6 assists while Victor Gerkman recorded 5 kills. The Greenville Spartans also stopped the young Mountaineers squad on Friday, 16-25, 20-25 and 14-25.  Brad Bink posted 6 points, 6 assists and 4 kills, for a squad that Coach Paul Slaver said “is coming along step by step.  We’re still working on the little things and need more communication on the floor.”  Phil Doin recorded 4 service points with 5 digs, and Dan Bassallo added 6 digs for Berlin.

The combined New Lebanon-Berlin Swim Teams split their match against Taconic Hills, with the Boys’ squad posting their first win of the year, 22 – 16 over the Titans.  Jeff Miller picked up wins in the 200 medley and 100 butterfly.  Mikale Exley won the 100 backstroke while Winter Exley was victorious in the 100 Breaststroke.  The Girls dropped their match 44-50 on the last race of the afternoon.  The NLB swimmers won both the 200 Medley and 200 Freestyle Relays.  Catherine Roden posted a victory in the 200 Freestyle and Gigi French in the 200 Medley.  Lindsey Smith won the 100 Freestyle.

The Berlin-New Lebanon wrestlers had the week off but resume their schedule with a pair of matches this week.[/private]
