George “Tends To The Election”

January 26, 2017 By eastwickpress

Sunday, October 27, 1839: We took in some of our apples to keep them from freezing.[private]

Monday: I went to Pittsfield with a load of apples of twenty six bushel and sold nearly all of them at 50 cts per. My wife and my daughter Sarah went with me to Pittsfield on a visit to brother Jay Wylie. We came home by way of Stern’s factory for Mrs Surdam to see if they wanted her to work but they did not want help.

Wednesday: This forenoon we drew pumpkins and this evening we made cider.

Saturday: Today I drew wood and we ground sweet apples for cider to make apples sauce and this evening I went to a political meeting, and on the way home I fetched my cider casks from James Adams, that he had repaired.

Sunday: This evening I cut my foot with an ax.

Monday: Today I met the town officers that composed the board for the election at Joel Latham’s. We took nearly two hundred votes and I paid 44 cts for my dinner and six cts for wine.

Tuesday: I tended to the election to Simon Cranston’s. We took nearly one hundred votes. I paid thirty seven cts for my dinner.

Wednesday: Today some rainy. I tended to the election to Hiram Brown’s. We took nearly two hundred and thirty votes and we canvassed the votes this evening and found about forty votes the majority in favor of the administration ticket. I paid 44 cts for my dinner and 25 cts for my supper. We adjourned until tomorrow at one o’clock pm to make returns of the votes to Troy for the county votes and who made out our bill for our services for this year to send to the Board of Supervisors. My account was seventeen dol and fifty.

Monday November 11: I went to Pittsfield with cider and apples. I carried three barrels of cider at two dol per barrel and twelve bushels apples at 50 cts per bushel. I went into the circus a short time before it was out but I did not pay for going in.

Friday: We picked up apples and made cider. This evening I took my covered wagon and carried my two oldest daughters to cousin Samuel Holcomb’s to singing school. Mr. Bush from Nassau teaches the school. I have signed two dollars for the school.

Saturday: I went to Pittsfield with cider and apples. I had two barrels and twelve gallons at two dollars per and I had 16 bushels and sold them at 50 cts per. On the way home from Lebanon my two oldest daughters and Freelove Pierce rode home. They had been to Lebanon to the funeral of old Squ John Bull. [/private]
