Victory Slips Away In Bennington

January 12, 2017 By eastwickpress

HF 55 – Mt. Anthony 58

Monday, January 9 at MAUHS. HF O 7-2, L 6-0. It’s usually a short ride to a big battle and this night was no different.[private] It was a tale of two halves, with the Panthers dominating the first and Mt. Anthony methodically chipping away at the Panther lead throughout the second. The Panthers had a great first half, jumping out to a 35-19 lead. The team sank five 3’s in the stretch. Mt. Anthony, on the other hand, struggled. The Patriots Ryan O’Neill scored seven points in the first quarter and that was the Pats total points. O’Neill had 12 of the 19 Patriot points at the half. He ended the game with 23 points.

Then the second half began and everything changed. The Pats outscored the Panthers 22-12 over the next eight minutes while the lead dwindled to a thin and getting thinner six points. The Panthers hung on as long as they could but the Pats kept coming. With three minutes in the game the Patriots took the lead. With the score at 58-55 and twenty seconds left, the Panthers still had a chance to tie the game. The Pats tied the game at 54, then took a two point lead with just under two minutes to go.

The Panthers had a final chance to tie with twenty seconds left. They ran the clock ran down to 4.8 seconds then took a timeout. After the inbounds pass, the Panthers got off a desperation three point shot that missed the mark.

Guy Milliman led the Panther scoring with 20 points. Evan McCart and Jon Kempf each added 12. The JV won.

HF 57 – Mechanicville 42

Friday, January 6 at HFCS. HF O 7-1, L 6-0; Mech O 5-7, 4-4. The Panthers held the Red Raiders to 12 first half points while scoring 36 of their own to grab an insurmountable lead. Mechanicville never threatened and the game wasn’t as close as the final score might indicate. Guy Milliman scored 17 points, using three 3’s in the second quarter for much of that. Jon Kempf added 14, with three 3’s of his own. The JV’s won, 65-34.

Friday, January 13, the boys travel to Stillwater to play the Warriors. The Panthers won the first meeting between the two teams. Monday, January 9, will find the Panthers in a rematch with Mt. Anthony. This could be a barnburner of a game. Wednesday, January 11, Tamarac visits the Panther Den. Scheduled game time for all varsity games is 7:30 pm. [/private]
