William J. Osterhout, Sr.

Berlin – William J. Osterhout, Sr., 85, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls.  Born in Troy in 1931, he was the youngest of four children born to the late John and Sarah Horan Osterhout.

[private]William had fond memories of his years as a boy growing up in South Troy. He later moved to Berlin following his marriage to the love of his life, Luella Yerden, on February 20, 1953, where they shared more than 62 years of marriage until her passing in 2015.

William worked as a cook in several Troy-area establishments and later was employed as a boiler operator with local manufacturer, W. J. Cowee, Inc.

His favorite pastimes included long drives and trips to Maine with his wife, reading, fishing and watching sports, particularly football.  He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Snow Parish in Grafton.

William is survived by his loving children, Sally Smith, William J. (Tammy) Osterhout, Jr. and Jean (Steven) Barber, all of Berlin; his cherished grandchildren, Billy Joe Osterhout, Amanda Barringer, Jason Osterhout, Charlie Osterhout, Melissa Mercier and Harold Stanley, as well as 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Joseph Nippes and also by his three siblings, John Osterhout, Margaret Callahan and Joseph Osterhout.

William’s family would like to express a special thank-you to the entire staff at The Center for Nursing and Rehab at Hoosick Falls for their care and support they provided to him.

William was laid to rest on Saturday January 28 at Berlin Community Cemetery.
