Panthers Advance With Win Over Hudson, 65-52

The Lady Panthers traveled to Glens Falls for the first game of a doubleheader Saturday evening. The Class B #4 seeded Ladies faced the #5 seeded Hudson Blue Hawks at Glens Falls High School.

[private]The Panthers (18-4) outplayed the Hawks throughout the first half. The Hawks struggled to score, only putting 18 points on the board in the first half, while the Panthers put up 35. The second quarter was the difference in the game when the Panthers scored 22 while the Hawks could only tally ten. Panther players Kelly Pine (10 rebounds), Logan Thayne (10), Sydney Miller (12) and Liz Ryan (9) were outrebounding the Hawks and giving the Panthers many more scoring opportunities than their opponents.

The Hawks made up some ground in the second half, outscoring the Panthers 23-19 in the third quarter to tighten up the score and stay in the game at 54-41, but both teams played each other even for the fourth quarter with 11 points each and the Panthers brought home the win.

Kelly Pine had 24 points, Logan Thayne added 22 and Liz Ryan had 12.

With the win the Ladies advanced to the semifinals held in Averill Park High School on Wednesday, March 1. Number one seeded Glens Falls, a winner over #8 seeded Fonda, 56-30 in the second game Saturday, was the Panthers opponent. This game was past deadline for The Eastwick Press.

The winner of that game plays in the Class B sectional finals on Saturday, March 4. The game is at Hudson Valley Community College beginning at 12:45 pm.

In other sectional action for Class B Wasaren League teams, #2 seed Tamarac is still in the hunt after defeating Johnstown on Tuesday. Tamarac played Cohoes in the second game Wednesday evening at Averill Park. In Wasaren League, Class C play, #2 Hoosic Valley defeated Mechanicville. HV played Lake George on Tuesday evening. Cambridge (round 1) and Greenwich (round 2) both lost to #1 Mekeel Christian. Stillwater lost to Berne-Knox.

On the boys side, Class B Wasaren teams Hoosick Falls and Tamarac both fell in the opening round. Class C saw Greenwich, Hoosic Valley, Cambridge, Waterford and Spa Catholic all out by end of the first round. Mechanicville lost to Maple Hill in the second round leaving only Stillwater to continue on. Stillwater plays Maple Hill at the Glens Falls Civic Center Thursday beginning at 6 pm. [/private]
