A Universalist Conference

April 20, 2017 By eastwickpress

Wednesday, May 20, 1840: This forenoon Mr. Benj Cole fetched Mr. Grosh, a Universalist preacher, to my house and left him with us.[private] After dinner I took my two horse team and carried my family and Mr. Grosh to the Seventh Day Baptist meeting house to the funeral of the Rev. Wm Wilcox wife who died in February in Cheshire and the funeral of Juni Chittenden’s wife, both their funeral discourses as one delivered by the Rev. Smith of Albany, a Universalist. Mrs Chittenden died on Monday night.

Thursday: We Universalists held conference at said Seventh Day Baptist meeting house. We had four preachers tender their names as follows, Mr. Smith of Albany, Mr. Grosh of Troy and Mr. Manly of West Stockbridge and our own priest Mr. Wilcox. They each delivered a discourse but Mr. Grosh he only read a hymn and made a prayer. I gave one dol to help defray the expences. Tonight Mr. Grosh returned home with me and stayed. On this evening he rode my horse to Lebanon to preach but the rain prevented the meeting.

Sunday, May 24: Today I took my two horse pleasure wagon and carried Mr. Grosh to the Union Meeting house near Mr. Dunam’s tavern in Nassau. Said Grosh preached there.

Tuesday, May 26: Today I worked on the highway with my plow and horse team and my son George Pease drove team on the highway. This morning Mr. Wm Chamblin had a son two years old by the name of Wm had his clothes take fire and burned him so bad that he died this evening about nine o’clock.

Wednesday: This forenoon I worked on the highway but did not take any help nor any team, and this afternoon I attended the funeral of Mr. Chamblain’s child. On this evening I walked down to Elem Tilden’s store and returned the twelve yards of cambric and had it credited. I returned it for it was not suitable for dresses.

Thursday: Today I fixed for to go to Albany. This afternoon Mr. Gilbert Green and wife and a Miss Row called and stayed this afternoon and took tea with us. Today my two boys went onto the mountain pond fishing.[/private]
