School Business

April 6, 2017 By eastwickpress

Tuesday, April 21, 1840: This forenoon I walked over and saw the other two trustees about hiring a school teacher. [private]Mr. Sylvenus Carpenter the second told me to hire a teacher and Mr. Benj. Goodrich told me he would agree to whatever lawful means was done about getting up a school and we talked about calling a school meeting for it was requested by Joshua B. Maxon.

Sunday, April 26: This afternoon a heavy thunder storm.

Monday: Today I made a new gate post and repaired wall and rail fence and on the evening I went up to Mr. John Russel’s and got the last summer’s school bill and divided the money that the school district drew from the State and Town. Each scholar drew in proportion to the number of days that the scholar went to school. We had twenty dol and six cts. On this evening, the young people from Lebanon and this town met to our house.

Wednesday: This forenoon I mended fence on my Rodgers farm and this afternoon I took my two horse team and carried a grist of wheat rye and corn to Adams mill and I carried Orra Holcomb home and my wife went with me. We took tea at cousin Samuel Holcomb’s and we returned home in a rain storm. Today I paid my school bill in the school district near Mr. Rollo’s, which was six dol and fifty eight cts. I did not draw any money from the town although it was due to me, but I was not entitled to any States money because I sent to School out of my own district. I paid my school bill to Calvin P. Sackett. I carried Robert Runnels cheese 20 lb 5 oz and price agreed nine cts per pound, he credited on book.

Thursday: This morning Mr. Aaron Marrels butchered the second veal calf for he had not time to butcher both last night and he took a piece of the veal to pay him and I took my single wagon and carried the veal to Lebanon and sold it at three cts per pound. I got my cash excepting a quarter to old Mr. Abner Perry, I trusted fifty cents and the Shakers paid me the cash ten cts per pound for the hides which was one dol and 87 cts. I sold the hindquarters and hides for four dol. I lent a forequarter to Hazard Morey and when I rode up to Adams Mill after my grist towards night I carried a forequarter to Cousin Samuel Holcomb and gave to him.

Friday: Today I went to Pittsfield with my two horse team. My son John F went with me, and we carried a few green apples and sold them by the penny and by the dozen and by the peck and we carried apple sauce and sold it at 40 cts per gallon, and pickled cucumbers in vinegar for ten cts per dozen and butter at 15 cts per pound. I got for all we sold nearly eleven dollars. [/private]
