Working On The School And Church

April 14, 2017 By eastwickpress

Saturday May 2, 1840: I walked over to Alonzo Rodgers and engaged him to put in five panes of glass into the school house and fix the hinge to a door to the privy.[private] Today I distributed nearly all the money that we drew to pay our school tax, and this afternoon I took my two horse pleasure wagon and carried my daughter L. Angeline and Freelove Pierce to Hiram W. Brown to be inspected for school keeping.

Monday: Today we plowed sward ground on my Rodgers farm about half a day and then it was rainy. Today my daughter began her school in our district at one dol and 25 cts per week and board to home. I send Sarah and Dwight Surdam. I carried them and fetched them to school, and I carried wood to have a fire at said school house. We have engaged L. Angeline to teach said school four months. Tuesday: Today I got the consent of Joshua B. Maxon and Sylvenas Carpenter the second, two of the trustees of the seventh Day Baptist meeting house to occupy said house for a funeral of the Rev. Wilcox deceased wife and for a Universalist conference which occupies two days.

Wednesday: Today I sent my son John F. to give notice to Samuel Holcomb that the Seventh Day Baptist grant us their house.

Monday, May 18: We drew manure and put into the corn hill and planted corn. This afternoon I met cousin Samuel Holcomb at the Seventh Day Baptist meeting house and we put in 25 panes of glass and nailed on some boards and cleaned out said house. I had sent by cousin Samuel Holcomb on Monday and had 30 panes of glass charged to E Edwin Griggs store one dollar.  [/private]
