Sunday, July 19, 1840: This afternoon I took my double wagon and carried my three daughters to the Select School house near Hiram W. Brown’s to the Rev. Wm. Wilcox meeting.[private]
Tuesday: We hayed it on my Rodgers farm. This morning Mr. Marrels began to help me by the day to pay his house rent at one dol per day. He only mowed one swath and quit working for he had a poor scythe. On this evening I rode over to Adams mill and got my grists that I carried last Saturday.
Wednesday: We hayed on said Rodgers farm. Today Wm Chapman finished a job of mowing on my Rodgers farm near Hiram Newton’s and his price was three dollars. He mowed all the course and wet ground. He began last week on Friday and finished it today. He had Simeon Wylie to help him to mow nearly all.
Thursday: We hayed it on said Rodgers farm and Mr. Marrels helped, which is the first day towards his house rent.
Friday: Today Wm Chapman refused the paper bill.
Sunday: Today I took my two horse team and carried all my family excepting Geo P to Elder Courier’s meeting. This evening I took my wife and rode to the pool.
Monday: This morning I took three dollars in Spetia in cents and went into Mr. Chamblain’s shop where Wm Chapman was and tendered him the money, three dollars for mowing a piece of grass as was agreed on, but he refused the money and I laid it on side of him on a bench and then left him and came home. He immediately went home. I sent to the shop and got the money and Mr. Marrels went with me to Mr. Chapman’s place of residence or where he resides with his father and I had said Marrels count the money and left it on said Chapman’s table in the presence of his housekeeper Silva Right and in about four hours after said Chapman served a summons on me it reads a trespass on the case. Today we hayed on my Rodgers farm.
Friday: On this week on Tuesday I gave my two daughters money and they went to Lebanon and bought them kid shoes, and on this day the one-leg man by the name of Higman died. He lives to the north part of town. [/private]
