Berlin’s Watipi Building Has New Owners

August 10, 2017 By eastwickpress

Submitted by Commander Chris Lecce

It’s been a long time coming but through the efforts of the Post membership and Berlin’s Town Officials it has become a reality…Berlin’s historic train station (Watipi Building) is officially the property of The American Legion Taconic Valley Post 937.  The transfer paperwork was signed at the Post’s monthly meeting (first Wednesday of each month at 7 pm), making it official!

The Post is planning on having a town-wide picnic and work day to celebrate the transfer and begin making minor repairs along with prepping the exterior for a new coat of paint. Date and time will be forthcoming.

The Watipi Building

The Post seeks recommendations for what color to paint the exterior, traditional green with dark green trim, historic yellow with green trim or some other color the station may have been painted.  Though the building is now a Legion Post, it is the desire of the Post membership to keep the exterior of the building as historically accurate as possible, i.e., a historic train station from a bygone era.

As always, donations are welcome and needed, be it labor, $$, material, or moral support.  The Taconic Valley veterans now have a place to call their own, a place to stop in and relax, play a game of pool, throw some darts, spike a ping pong ball or two, play a game of cards or just watch a movie or ball game.

Post 937 would like to thank all those who made this transfer possible!

As always, the Post is continually seeking new members to join its ranks.  If you are a veteran who honorably served during a wartime period or conflict, or are currently serving, you are eligible to join the American Legion.  Go to www.nypost937.org to learn more or contact a Post member for additional information.  Post meetings are at 7 pm the 1st Wed. of every month at 15 Railroad Ave., Berlin NY.  Post 937 is looking to start a Legion Riders Motorcycle Chapter, the first of its kind in the Taconic Valley.  If you’re a Legion member and ride a motorcycle, regardless of what Post you may belong to, you are eligible to join their chapter.  Contact the Post Commander, Chris Lecce for more information:
