The Karen McGovern Volleyball Tournament Returns For 18th Year With An Anonymous Donor Offering A $10,000 Challenge

August 11, 2017 By eastwickpress

Be a part of it!  On Saturday September 9 the tradition continues for the Karen McGovern Volleyball Tournament, which will be held at the Sand Bar in Hoosick Falls starting at 10 am. The event is a way for family and friends to remember Karen McGovern and celebrate her life. She was a very special and spirited woman, who was stricken with cancer in the prime of her life. Her courageous fight inspired so many, that a fund was created and has been dedicated to helping the community.

During this 18th year of the tournament, we will be celebrating the life of a person in our community who has struggled with a catastrophic disease and through the battle fought with courage, perseverance and dignity, much like Karen.  This year the committee will be presenting the honor to Joe Magaisano in remembrance of his wife Gayle who touched the hearts of many in Hoosick Falls and beyond.

Teams are invited to participate at $30 per person and friends are invited to make a donation to the Karen and Molly McGovern Fund. All participants and donors who make a contribution of $30 or more can enjoy a barbecue lunch. An anonymous donor has offered a matching challenge of up to $10,000. The first donations made prior to the end of the tournament, totaling up to $10,000 will be applied to the match. Donations and participant registration can be made by making checks out to the Rural Rensselaer County Council for Health & Human Services  (RRCCHHS) and mailing to PO Box 132, Hoosick Falls, NY 12090.

The Karen and Molly McGovern Fund Board is made up of volunteers and there are no administrative fees.  The fund has been established in memory of Karen McGovern who passed in 2000 and Molly McGovern who passed in 2013.  Both were members of Hoosick Falls and had an impact on the community.  All money raised goes toward helping local individuals who are fighting cancer or other life threatening illnesses. The money is distributed by the Rural Rensselaer County Council for Health and Human Services.   For more information please call 518-857-7115 or email mcgovernfund@gmail.com.
