WW I Veteran Memorialized

October 15, 2017 By eastwickpress

Perry Wescott was 25 years old when he and his brother William enlisted in the U.S Army to serve in Europe in World War I. He survived the conflict, his brother however, was killed in action. He returned home to marry Clara Bell Burdick, who told him when he left, she would be waiting for him. Together they had 14 children, five of which still survive. They are Ida, Elmer, Martha and Joyce of Berlin, and Joseph of Valley Falls.

Perry suffered a heart attack at the age of 42, after which he was able to collect his Army Pension. He enjoyed remodeling chairs, from beginning to the finished product. He also did carpentry and other light jobs.  He also grew fields of vegetables and raised meat to feed his family. He had a stroke at age 79, was hospitalized and later died. His family said he never spoke much of the war, but figured as horrific as it was, why would he.

Perry was born on April 2,1892, enlisted on September 20,1917 and was released from the Army on August 17, 1920.  He died on January 5, 1972.
