Sectionals: Mountaineer’s Soccer Stuns Division’s Top Seed

October 26, 2017 By eastwickpress

The Berlin Boys Soccer team continues to prove they can play with the big boys. They began this past week in the Section 2 tournament by defeating the #8 seed Waterford, 5-4. Ranked #9, and as the lowest seed remaining in tournament play, they had to travel to #1 Mayfield for a match-up with the Panthers.

Berlin’s Ryan Willis scored early in the first half on an assist from Dan Basally and the spectacular play of the Mountaineers defense made the score stand up. Viktor Gerkman made several outstanding saves throughout the game, many times having to dive on the ball to keep it from going in the goal. He ended up with 17 saves overall. Anthony Santon blocked a wide open shot in the final minutes with his chest to prevent the ball from going in the goal. Connor Votra, Connor Douglas and Seiji Akera all contributed in the shutout win. Ryan Burdick came off the Berlin Bench and did a great job defensively as well.

They were scheduled to play #4 Cambridge on Tuesday, October 24, but the game was postponed one day. If they win, they advanced to the championship game, which will be held Friday, October 27, at 5 pm. The game will be played at Watervliet High School.
