Saturday, April 23, 1842: This afternoon I took my single wagon and carried my wife to brother Sylvester’s and left her on a visit. I then went to Adams mill with one and a half bushel each of corn and barley to grind for provender and from there I rode to the widow Verona Holcomb and took tea. Then I returned, I called to Edward Carr’s to see Russel Brown if he would come and frame my shed. He engaged to come and I returned and fetched my wife from brother Sylvester’s
Sunday: Today the wife of John Bull died. Monday: This afternoon I and my son took a single wagon to ride to Claudius Moffitt’s to a court betwixt Silva Right, Plaintiff and Wm Chapman, defendant and I was subpoened on the part of the defendant, but we only got one mile and my horse failed. Geo P. returned with the horse and wagon. He only got to James Rowley’s and the horse dropped dead and he returned home and John F. got Manuel Buten and skinned said horse and they took our oxen and drew the carcass down into said Rowley’s lot, and I credited said Buten 25 cts on a school bill, and when my son returned with the horse Mr. John Russell came along and I rode with him to the court. It was a jury case before Squ. Strait. Miss Right got judgement for fifty dollars. From there I walked to Squ Nathan Howard’s and the widow Verona Holcomb’s, my two oldest daughters were there, they had been to the funeral of Green Gardner’s wife at the Chapel, and tonight cousin Verona and her son Nathan rode home with my two daughters.
Tuesday: This morning I took a horse and went up to Mr. James Rowley’s and drew home my wagon where the horse died.
Wednesday: This morning I took my single wagon and went onto my Rodgers farm and set my two sons plowing and I returned home and took my single wagon and carried cousin Verona Holcomb and her two sons Nathan and Andrew home and I gave her a quarter of veal. Today cousin widow Verona Holcomb turned me out all the property her husband Holcomb gave me a bill of sale last Sept and she gave me liberty to leave the said property in her possession at present and I returned home.
Monday, May 2: On this morning I took my single wagon and carried my daughter L. Angeline to school keeping up in school district near the Christian Chapel in this town. I engaged her to one of the trustees by the name of Johnson Brown for one dol and 50 cts per week providing the school was small. On this afternoon I took my single wagon and carried H. Platt Wylie onto my Rodgers farm and he sowed my oats about three acres for my hands were so afflicted with the salt rheum and still worse, for I was under the operation of James Vegitable pills and drops.
