Covering Cousin Samuel Holcomb’s Debts
Saturday, October 29, 1842: Today I took my one-horse team and rode to Hancock Village and I called to the blacksmith. From there I rode to Hiram W. Brown’s to a political meeting and from there Simon Cranston rode with me to the widow Charity Vary and I gave my note of two hundred and sixty six dollars and 29 cts in lieu of a note of two hundred dollars dated Feb. 5, 1838 against Samuel Holcomb, Nathan Howard, Nathan Howard Jnr and my self, George Holcomb. I gave said note to the widow Charity Vary and Simon Cranston indemnifies himself that I shall have the above note bearing date Feb 5 1838 from D.L. Seymour’s office from Troy free of expense from this date. Said Cranston gave me a writing to this effect. I then returned home.
Monday, Oct 31, 1842: Today we worked at barn boarding.
Tuesday, Nov 1: We worked at the barn boarding up on the new part and today brother Sylvester worked for me making barn doors.
Wednesday: This afternoon I walked up to the widow Verona Holcomb’s to look over the property that I have advertised for sale and brother F. Jay Wylie went with me to look over said property.
Thursday: This afternoon I took my one horse team and rode to Lebanon to see Mr. Wm Gay to get his advise what I had better do in bidding off the wagons to my vendue.
Friday: Today I tended my vendue to sell off the property that was mortgaged to me by Samuel Holcomb to secure me for endorsing a note Feb 5, 1838, of two hundred dollars at the house of the widow Verona Holcomb. I bid off one anvil five dollars 50 cts, one bellows four dollars and 75 cts, one vise, one dol and 50 cts and two sulkeys fourteen dol and 50 cts, one wagon thirty one dol 50 cts, one brass clock six dol, one Franklin Stove and pipe two dol and 37 cts. The whole amount I bid off was seventy one dollars and 27 cts, and the household furniture that Orra Holcomb bid off was thirty four dollars and 33 cts and the property that others bid off made up the whole amount to one hundred and twenty two dollars and 20 cts to be applied to the note of the widow Charity Vary which is two hundred and sixty six dollars and 27 cts. Mr. John Russel rode up with me and bid off part of said property for me. The vendue closed about three o’clock this afternoon and I paid Mr. Pardie Lapum one dollar for his services to auctioneer off said property and I paid Wm Clark 25 cts to keep the accounts and I paid Wm Bliss Maxon 25 cts for taking the bid on the vise, he bid off at one dol and 50 cts. When I returned home I fetched part of the smith tools. Today brother Sylvester worked for me making barn doors.
Saturday: Today I and my son Geo P we went twice with the ox team and one horse team drawing home the property that I bid off yesterday to the vendue.
Sunday: Today Doctor Ludwick Green called and left medicine for my wife which makes four times that he has called to doctor my wife. On this evening I walked to Lebanon to inquire of Squ John Bull if property when bid off should be secured, the value, before it might be taken away
Tuesday, Nov. 8: I walked over to Election to Hiram W. Brown’s. I returned home in the afternoon and worked at the barn boarding. Today Doctor Ludwick Green stayed with us and this evening I rode over to Hancock Village to see if Mr. Abel Gorton had money to lend. He told me he had and I must call the last of the week
