An Injury While Butchering Hogs
Thursday, November 10, 1842: Today I took my single wagon and L. Angeline with me, we rode to Pittsfield. We took dinner at brother F. Jay Wylie’s and L. Angeline remained there and I rode to Windsor to Samuel Minor and stayed tonight. My business was to see if he would lend money. Said Minor engaged me one hundred dollars by the first January and more if he had it. Tonight a snow storm.
Friday: This morning I returned from Windsor. I got to brother F. Jay Wylie’s at twelve o’clock and took dinner and then my daughter L. Angeline went with me to Mr. Fen’s store and bought 22 yds calico at 22 cts per and six yds ribbon. We then returned to brother Wylie’s and got our team and returned home by six this evening.
Saturday: Today I sent my son John F. to Hancock to see Mr. Abel Gorton to know when he can lend the money he engaged to me. He said to my boy to come tomorrow morning and the money would be ready.
Sunday: Today I walked up to Hancock Village and borrowed two hundred and fifty dollars payable the first April next to Mr, Abel Gorton on interest. Then I returned. As I started, a man overtook me, I rode with him to the Baptist meeting house in our town, his name is Roads from Berlin. I then went to the widow Charity Vary’s and paid up the note I gave Oct 29, 1842, and got receipt in full of said Charity Vary, and then I returned home.
Wednesday: I worked at the barn. Today my two sons plowed sward, I went to school meeting.
Sunday: This evening Doctor Ludwick Green called again to my wife.
Monday: We butchered our hogs. Mr. Tyler helped, which pays me the fifty cents that he owed for making cider and the balance was twelve cts due him. I paid in turnips, half a bushel, and I gave him nearly half a bushel of onions. Today when we were scalding the third hog I fell backwards hauling the hog from the water and jarred me and lamed my right foot. I did not do anything more today, and on this evening my son Geo P. took the one horse wagon and carried two hogs to Frederick Everett’s, weight which was 321 pounds at four dol per and got trusted to the amount of one dol and four cts.
Tuesday: My foot was lame of the fall yesterday and I did not tend to anything but salt my pork, four hogs Aaron Chapman cut up my pork and I paid in a rib, and on this evening H. P. Wylie was married to Miss Freelove Pierce by Elder Jones at the house of James Glass.
