Hoosick Falls Girls Battle To the End

Cambridge 49 – HF 42

Tuesday, February 27. Cohoes HS. Hoosick Falls lost to Cambridge by 33 and 26 in their regular season meetings and it looked like more of the same early. But the Panthers were up for the challenge and for the final three quarters gave the Indians all they could handle. After falling behind 16-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Class C, #5 seeded Hoosick Falls Panthers outscored the #1 seeded Cambridge Indians 19-5 over the next eight minutes. Using Logan Thayne’s ten points to put themselves back in the game, they tied the score at 21 with just over three minutes left in the quarter, then took a six point, 27-21 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, Cambridge came back to retake the lead and hold a six point, 39-33, advantage at the start of the fourth quarter. It was more of a struggle for the Panthers to get points now but they got the Cambridge lead down to two with just over one and one-half minutes to play.

At 45-41, four points still separated the teams with 51 seconds to go. From there, Cambridge made their foul shots to get the win. Panther Logan Thayne (21 points) and Cambridge’s Helen Mooney (19) were the only two players to score in double figures. With the win, Cambridge advances to the championship game on Friday, March 2 at 6 pm at Hudson Valley CC. They play #2 seed Mekeel Christian, a 51-49 winner over Greenville in the early game.

Tamarac 47 – Glens Falls 39

In Class B, the top seeded Lady Bengals fell behind the Glens Falls Indians early in the first quarter on Saturday, February 24, but trimmed the deficit to just two pints by the end of the quarter, moved ahead before the half and held of a late surge by Glens Falls, to post the win and move on in the Section 2 tournament. Emily Erickson lead all Tamarac scorers with 21 points, Renna Poulin added another 13.

Kayla Doody also played a major role in the win, helping the Lady Bengals beat the Glens Falls press with crisp passing to her teammates. following the game, Tamarac coach Kurt Baily told The Eastwick Press, he was not at all surprised the 8th seeded Indians plays so well, noting they come from a very tough Foothills Conferance. He also credits his girl’s condition, noting it made the difference as the game worn on. the game was part of a double header played at Tamarac.

Boys Sectional Play

Hoosick Falls 70 – Greenville 51

Saturday, February 24 at Hudson Valley CC. The #2 Panthers easily defeated #10 Greenville, using a 27 point second quarter to put Greenville in a 42-24 hole they couldn’t find a way out of. Jon Kempf and CJ Baker each scored 18 points and Guy Milliman added 15. Evan McCart, a key component of the Panthers success, sprained an ankle in the second half and his status is questionable for the upcoming games.

With the win, the Panthers play #6 Maple Hill Thursday evening, March 1, at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls with a 5:30 pm tip-off. The winner of that game will play the winner of Thursdays Lake George / Spa Catholic game (7 pm – immediately following the Hoosick Falls game) in the championship game at Cool Insuring Arena on March 3. The game has a scheduled 2 pm tip-off.

Lake George 69 – Stillwater 37

#1 Lake George crushed #9 Stillwater, 69-37, to advance. Lake George plays #5 Spa Catholic on March 1, 7 pm, at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls.

Spa Catholic 44 – Granville 42
