Sunday January 1, 1843: Today continues snow squally and blustering. My wife remains feeble.
Tuesday: Today I took my cutter to ride over to Doctor Green but the road was drifted and I left my team at James Rowley’s and walked. I called to Mr. Russel D. Brown’s and paid him ten dollars cash on account for carpenter work last summer, and called to see old Miss Platt that was very dangerous sick and then I called down to Doctor L. Green to see why he had not visited my wife as usual. He made an excuse that he had not got any medicine and said I would not pay him, but he prepared some medicine but the kind that was wanted he had not got and urged me to fetch home. I took it but it did not answer for my wife. I paid said Doctor L. Green two dollars cash and returned home.
Wednesday: Today I chopped timber on the hill and drew down to make an ox sled and Aaron Chapman makes the sled and calls it four days works and boards it out. He agrees to give two days works out of a week for board. Today we made sausages.
Thursday: Today I took my cutter and rode to the funeral of Amos Broad at his own dwelling, he died on Tuesday morning. Mr. Whittacker preached and from there I rode to the Springs. I called to Squ John Bull’s and paid 12 cts for lemons. I then came to Gays and Madison’s Store and got one half pint sweet oil nine cts and 12 cts worth starch and six cts for four papers of matches and three cts for an almanac and paid in butter at fourteen cts per. Then I called to Edwin Griggs’ store and he credited me 25 for a fat goose and charged me for a bottle of Jones drops and a box of pills two dollars and 59 cts and bargained for white beans in payment at one dollar and 25 cts per bushel.
Friday: Today I took my cutter and my daughter Charlotte with me rode to Moses Tilden’s store and sold three skim cheese 72 pounds at three cts per and bought nine yards calico at 12 cts per and two brown linen table cloths at one dollar each and 97 cts due him, he agreed to take more skim cheese. We then returned home. On this evening my wife was taken to raising blood which was caused by coughing. She did not raise but little blood but it was the means of her being weak and faint.
Saturday: This morning I took my cutter and rode to Moses Tilden’s store and carried two cheese weight 44 pounds at three cts per. I then came to Aaron Gilbert herbist store and paid 12 cts for a paper of water horehound. I then came to Edwin E Griggs store and left him two bushels of beans at one dol and 25 cts per. On the way to Lebanon I called to Mr. James Glass’s and the widow Morey’s and Wm Bailey’s to inquire for archangel for my wife but did not get any. Today I paid Mr. Manuel Buten for cradling two acres of oats. I paid him in oats which was two bushels. Today begins a heavy thaw.
Sunday: The thaw continues. My wife is a little better and the bleeding at the lungs has stopped.
