Monday, June 12, 1843: I hewed two long sills for to renew sill my cheese house and at night I walked over and engaged Westalo to come and help frame three new sills for the cheese house.
Tuesday: I plowed out some corn and mended some fence where the water had carried it away on last Saturday in a great thunder shower and this afternoon we went and helped H. Platt Wylie raise an addition to his house.
Wednesday: Today Mr. Alonzo and Westalo Rodgers came and put three new sills and two sleepers to my cheese house and this afternoon I had another bee and slipped my cheese house to the spot where I wanted it. I had two yoke of oxen come and we hitched to one corner when we slipped it.
Thursday: I and my two sons worked on the highway with the ox team and plow and had five days credited.
Sunday: This morning I rode with my wife and carried Charlotte part of the way to the chapel to meeting. My wife’s health improves.
Wednesday: I took my one horse wagon to Pittsfield with some old cheese but could not sell any but I sold two new cheese at 5½ cts per pound and took store pay. It was at Pontoosac Factory Store and I paid 20 cents for four pounds nails and I came home by way of Lanesborough to look at Mr. Fuller’s colt and I got home about ten o’clock this evening.
Thursday: Today I took my wagon and carried my wife to old Mr. Johnson’s on a visit and today I worked at my cheese house underpinning and boarding up.
Friday: I took my one horse wagon and my daughter Charlotte and started for Troy. I took on a few cheese for sale. We called in Nassau to cousin Chauncy Rows and took dinner and then we went to Brunswick to James Bush’s and stayed. I sold some cheese on the road going.
Saturday: This morning we went from James Bush’s to Troy. I sold five cheese in all at six pence per and they averaged one dol and 25 cts a cheese. I paid two dollars for Charlotte a parasol, six cts for gin and I handed the clerk in the County Clerk’s office fifty cents to have Jerome Howard qualified as a witness to a mortgage from his father to me. Charlotte took tea at Wm Chapman’s. A thunder shower while we were in Troy. We started out at five o’clock, rained so we came to Sand Lake to Rufus Withee’s and stayed.
Sunday: We rode home from Rufus Withee’s from Sand Lake and got home about three o’clock, I fetched home two cheese that I did not sell.
Monday: I worked at the cheese house underpinning and to nail on boards that were taken off when we drew the said building.
Saturday, July 1: I took my single wagon and rode to Lanesborough after lime but did not get any for it was not burned. I came home by the way of Pittsfield. I exchanged two ½ bushels of barley for brick. I do agree to pay 50 cts a hundred and am to have 50 cts a bushel to Mr. Francis and I fetched home one hundred and twenty five of said bricks.
Monday: Today I took my one horse team and carried my wife and daughter Sarah to Pittsfield on a visit to brother F. Jay Wylie’s. We went by way of the Shaker Villages.
Tuesday, July 4: I tended the temperance celebration, and we started for home at half past three o’clock. We called in Lebanon and sold Edwin Griggs an old cheese at 7 cts per pound, 21 pounds and we returned home by sunset. My two sons tended Independence on Pool Hill.
