The Spatterdock Darner (Rhionaeschna mutata) is found in the northeastern United States, but it closely resembles the Blue Eyed Darner of the western U.S.

Dragonflies usually hang out near water. Area residents can see dragonflies congregate in the early evening in flying feeding frenzies as they eat those pesky mosquitoes. This one, however, rested in the warmth in Petersburgh. Photo by Trix Niernberger.
